Good Morning Viet-Fon!

Posted by Ubik on February 15th, 2007

For a company that has yet to show some earnings, not to mention profits, it’s quite remarkable that they have managed to make Time talk about them in their first birthday.
It looks like a good deal: something (free wifi almost everywhere, if you’re a Linus) out of a little (the downpayment for the router, which you can get for free in many cases). But, in truth, what you do obtain is very sparse hotspots you have to drive around to catch, and then use from your own car, out there in the (hot/cold/pick your own) air, out of, well, the same, nothing or very little. But that’s not the point, even if it looks like a good deal for the fonero. How many at-cost or free routers are needed to get a nice ROI? 1 million? 2 million? With an investment of 22 million$ from Google and other partners, mean they will run out of cash before they can create any sizable revenue.
All in all, it has bubble written in big shiny blinking letters all over it. But, of course, I might be wrong.”
